Las grandes empresas de comunicación suelen defender que son medios independientes frente a los medios públicos, a los que consideran dependientes del poder político. Resulta bastante curioso que intenten argumentar que mientras la línea de un medio público la marca el gobierno de turno, la de un medio privad0 no la marca el propietario.
Sin embargo, estas últimas semanas hemos asistido en España a un buen ejemplo de lo que significa la independencia en un grupo privado de información, con el espectáculo de todos los medios de comunicación del grupo Prisa lanzándose a la yugular del gobierno por que éste ha tenido la osadía de aprobar la normativa de la TDT de pago sin atender a su dictado. La bomba lanzada contra el gobierno desde todos los medios del grupo Prisa ha sido tan evidente que muchos otros medios de comunicación se han hecho eco [1] [2]. El fuego se abrió con un editorial brutal contra Zapatero [3] y ha continuado con un continuo ataque al gobierno, muy centrado en la destrucción de Zapatero, desde todos los medios del grupo Prisa. En estas dos últimas semanas los oyentes de la SER habrán tenido que comprobar el dial de su radio varias veces, pensando que por error tenían sintonizada la COPE, y los lectores de El País habrán vuelto a la portada varias veces creyendo que habían comprado El Mundo o La Razón.
El ataque ha sido tan brutal que hasta el new York Times publicaba el día 13 de septiembre [4] un artículo dedicado a glosar el desencuentro entre Prisa y el gobierno por cuenta de la TDT de pago. Tanto es así, que puede que el resultado sea más negativo para el grupo Prisa que para el gobierno. Hoy el periódico El País dedicaba su sección del defensor del lector a una larga justificación del director del periódico para argumentar que las críticas no suponen un giro radical en la posición del periódico [5]. Resulta además paradójico que la tribunal del defensor del lector se convierta en un editorial.
La conclusión es sencilla, si la línea editorial de todo el grupo Prisa, incluído El País, la Cadena SER y Cuatro, se puede variar de forma radical simplemente por el interés económico del grupo, ¿qué credibilidad le queda a cualquier información dada por este grupo de comunicación? ¿qué credibilidad le quedan al resto de medios de otros grupos de comunicación que defienden sus propios intereses? Sólo los medios de comunicación públicos, sometidos a un estricto control para garantizar su imparcialidad y veracidad pueden asegurar una buena información de la ciudadanía.
